The security concierge plays a critical role in ensuring buildings and locations are protected against unauthorised entry. They are also essential for ensuring the wellbeing of residents, guests or employees, depending on the type of building they are guarding. You might see a security concierge in an office building, a residential building, a hotel or a shopping complex, for example. 

The concierge role sits between patrol security and reception staff, offering the chance for you to be involved in keeping a building secure, whilst also being the first point of call for visitors. You will be the face of a company, directing and escorting visitors to the building whilst also ensuring only staff members who are supposed to be there can gain access.

This role is incredibly varied and will also depend on the type of building to be protected. The security concierge is generally in charge of a residential or commercial building and will control who can gain access, among other essential tasks. This could include:

  • Monitoring and surveillance – Depending on the requirements, this could involve patrols, CCTV monitoring, or a combination of the two. 
  • Security alert response – A key part of the role is to respond to alarms, disturbances, or security threats with the appropriate actions.
  • Control access – As the first port of call on the door, the security concierge will manage access to the premises. This could include checking credentials or monitoring swipe card entry.
  • Provide a high level of customer service – A security concierge will often be the first person visitors will see, so they need to be warm and welcoming as well as alert to potential threats. They need to have excellent knowledge of the building and the surrounding area so they can direct people appropriately.
  • Emergency response –  As part of your role, you might have to coordinate with emergency services, follow established protocols and ensure the safety of all individuals on the premises.
  • Record keeping – The security concierge needs to be comfortable keeping accurate records. Records can help security to spot patterns of suspicious behaviour, which is why they maintain accurate records of security-related incidents, daily activities and access control logs.
  • Equipment maintenance – The security concierge will need to ensure that security equipment, such as surveillance cameras, access control systems and alarms, is in good working condition. They need to report any malfunctions or the need for repairs to the appropriate personnel in a timely fashion.

Security concierges typically work in shifts, which could include unsociable times such as evenings, weekends and public holidays. This role may require standing for extended periods, patrolling various areas, and responding to emergencies in a timely manner. The work environment may vary, including residential buildings, commercial properties and gated communities.

To become a security concierge, you will need to have the relevant SIA certification and hold a valid SIA licence. This requires training and extensive checks to ensure there are no legal or health reasons why you shouldn’t be a concierge. As a concierge, you will have access to sensitive information, and it’s important that you act with integrity in this role.

Most security concierges will either complete CCTV operative training, security guard training or door supervisor training. Once you have passed your training, you can apply to the SIA for your licence. This will not be granted unless you pass extensive checks, including criminal background and mental health checks.

Salary expectations for a concierge role

As a security concierge, you can expect to begin working on a starting salary of around £19,000 per year. With more experience, you could earn around £24,000 per year. As the head of security, you could command a salary of around £35,000 per year.
